GoGo Penguin by GoGo Penguin Vinyl Review
|It took four albums for acid jazz trio GoGo Penguin to release a self-titled album, but they finally decided to do it, and the results are pretty great.
One thing that’s immediately obvious is how quick the music is throughout this record. While previous GoGo Penguins have some awesome upbeat tracks (Control Shift being a prime, and ridiculously good example) they’ve been balanced out by slower and more considered tracks alongside them. This time round the tempo is definitely more consistently quick, which isn’t a bad thing at all, but it’s likely to excite and exhaust in equal measures.
The vinyl sound continues to fit the music perfectly, giving the double bass room to come through without losing the magical piano sound. It’s close to a pseudo-live sound, putting you in the same room as the band themselves with all the warmth you’d want from a vinyl release. I’d also give a nod to the beautifully simple yet effective cover art, with the raised logo looking gorgeous on a large vinyl sleeve.
Whether this upbeat move is an intentional drift towards a slightly new sound remains to be seen, but it’s a great album and most definitely worth adding to your vinyl collection.
