Onward Review
|You can always rely on a Pixar film to tug at the heartstrings, on Onward is now exception. In a fantasy world where ancient magic has been replaced by modern technology and unicorns fight over food, two brothers discover some magic their late father had left for them which would bring him back to life for one day only. After hours of failing to cast the spell, 16th birthday-boy Ian accidentally starts the magic off, but it fails, leaving only his dad’s legs brought back. The 24 hours has begun, and the brothers have a race against time to find a special gem to be able to cast the spell fully and finally see their dad again.
It’s a really good adventure. Older brother Barley treats it like an RPG game quest, and the relationship between the brothers is typical Pixar fodder as it twists and turns to an emotional final few scenes that bring those stinging eyes back that we expect from them.
Voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, the two brothers are the stars, and push the film along at a great pace which is easy to follow and impossible to get bored by, despite a slightly slow start.
But it’s Pixar, and you know what you’re getting from them. It’s great. You should see it.
