Tassimo Vivy 2 Review

When I started drinking coffee there was only one option if you wanted a decent cup: grind your own beans and bring out your inner barista using a proper espresso machine. But nowadays the competition in the world of coffee is quite intense, and with various pod-based machines now offering very decent coffee we chose to take a look at the pleasingly small Tassimo Vivy 2.

The machine itself is a really nice looking unit. Small, curvy and fits into that snug corner in the kitchen that you wanted to use for the toaster but it didn’t fit. You’ll need side access to full up the water container, and with it being on the smaller side that’ll happen every few drinks, depending on the size of the drink. The Tassimo machines have the really neat feature of scanning a barcode and automatically working out how much water to run through, meaning you just pop the disc in, press the only button that’s on the machine and walk off without worrying about it overflowing. Awesome. I don’t think that discs are recyclable though, which is a bit of a bummer in the recent environmentally conscious climate.

The drinks are pretty decent too, but you’ll need to experiment to find the ones you like the most. The reviews on Tassimo’s site are the usual mix of 1 star “these are nasty” and 5 star “best drink ever”, so it’s worth getting some of the mixed packs they offer from time to time. There’s a range of Costa drinks though, as well as the new L’Or brand that’s quite popular, and we found the coffee from these to be pretty good; the Caramel Machiato drinks are absurdly nice. As with any type of coffee making though the drinks are hit and miss depending on your tastes, you’ll get that with any method of coffee making, but they did seem a little expensive to buy. Definitely keep an eye out for supermarket offers or sales on the Tassimo site itself.

Generally though, this is a very decent machine. It’s small, it’s not overly expensive for such a convenient way to get a nice coffee, and the one-button system is really nice. Definitely a solid consideration if you’re after something like it.
