Assetto Corsa Competizione Review (PS4)

After a lengthy wait, Assetto Corsa Competizione is finally available on consoles, and having spent some time on the PS4 version we can pretty safely say that it’s been very much worth the wait. Focussing on the GT3 category of racing (by happy coincidence my favourite by far) you won’t find a car roster or track list to rival the likes of Gran Turismo Sport or Project CARS 2, but you’ll definitely find a strong sim racer that works far better on a standard controller than you might think.

A career mode lets you start off by testing at Monza under various conditions, then pick a team and get underway with your racing. All the while you’re on track you’re being monitored for your control, speed, consistency, clean racing and so on, and after some time you’ll start to get recommendations on how to improve your driving, which is a really cool touch. That’s especially handy online, considering better stats give you access to better lobbies and, in theory, cleaner racing. It looks great too, but it’s the sound that blew me away. With a decent set of headphones this game really roars.

Things aren’t perfect; there are some suspect shadows, it can be hard to join a lobby online as you can’t join while a race is underway, and the animation of the driver themselves is a bit weird at times, but if you’re after a strong racer than really pushes you to be the best driver you can be, Assetto Corsa Competizione could be your next pit stop.
