HyperX Alloy FPS RGB Keyboard Review

If you’re a PC gamer you’ve probably got a favourite keyboard and mouse combination. It can be tough to move away from what you know and try something new, but if you haven’t tried one of HyperX’s offerings, now might be a good time to do just that.

The Alloy FPS RGB keyboard is everything you’d want from a keyboard, with very little that you’d want from some accompanying software. The keyboard itself is excellent to use, with very definite key strokes thanks to the great quality switches underneath each one. Every key on the keyboard has it’s own full RGB LED beneath it, meaning you can not only set up some pretty trippy effects, but also map out game controls onto the keyboard so you don’t lose that mystical button that saves you life at just the right moment.

The problem is in the HyperX Ngenuity software, which is still in beta and is very slow and clunky to use at times. Your games won’t automatically hook into the keyboard and do fancy things, like you’ll find in the latest Terraria update when combined with Logitech and Corsair keyboards, and there are no built-in profiles for games. If you want to map out the controls, you need to do it yourself.

But you can do it yourself at least, and while it’s a bit slow and laborious it’s not difficult. You can have some nice lighting and effects set up within minutes, and with the keyboard being a great size it’ll sit on your desk happily while still giving you a decent typing area as well.

So if you’re looking for a change this could well be a keyboard worth a look, but be prepared for some dodgy software at the moment and a lack of developers being able to hook into the keyboard for pretty extras.
