The Lego Batman Movie Review
|The Lego Movie was a huge hit a couple of years back, and so the idea of a whole new Lego Batman film could have ended up going one of two ways. Would it end up being a poorly judged tie-in, loosely hooking onto a guest appearance from Batman in said film, and end up as one of those “they should’ve left it” films?
No. It wouldn’t. It’s great fun.
The Lego Batman Movie is brilliant, from the voice acting through to the visual jokes and genuinely amusing dialogue. The story of Dick, an orphan who Bruce Wayne inadvertently adopts and ends up with the Robin codename, bringing out Wayne’s own issues dealing with the death of his parents as a kid (it’s not outlined quite like that, so it’s not a morbid film for kids to watch) and ending up as a bit of a loner. There’s a touching undercurrent to the film, coated with a fantastic series of interactions between Batman and the Joker and a hell of a lot of bangs, voice-dubbed “pew pew pew” shooting and action scenes.
My only concern was, being a superhero film of sorts, if it’d be suitable for younger kids. My 5 year old was desperate to see if having fallen in love with Emmett and co in the Lego Movie, and having watched it through first there was very little I was concerned about. In fact, I enjoyed it that much I’ve happily sat in with him watching it several more times. It’s maybe not quite as good as the Lego Movie, but it’s up there, and is another excellent addition to the ever-growing Lego catalogue of Lego TV and film features.
