The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp Review

Jack Sparks died while writing this book. Cheerful eh?

The Last Days of Jack Sparks follows the popular, social media obsessed star as he researches his latest book about the supernatural, trying to find evidence that ghosts and spirits actually exist. As time goes on things get truly weird for Jack, and while I fully expected this to be a funny book to read (and it genuinely is in places) there are parts of this which genuinely shocked me, especially when it comes to a certain YouTube video.

While Jack is carrying out his research he attends an exorcism, and finding the whole thing a joke makes fun of it publicly – this sparks (unintentional pun, sorry) a series of ever creepy encounters which, while he does his best to debunk them, even made me feel a bit spooked. A YouTube video, mysteriously uploaded to his profile, takes centre stage with Sparks desperately trying to work out what it contained. When the origin is revealed everything finally clicks into place, and actually made me gasp quietly to myself at the enormity of what gets discovered. Even the note at the end by Sparks’ brother gives some more reason to raise your eyebrows, after all at this point you’ll be totally sold on the characters and their outcomes.

The Last Days of Jack Sparks isn’t entirely what I expected it to be, but there’s no mistaking that this is an incredibly enjoyable book, and well worth checking out. It takes the modern obsession with social media and an ever-present stream of updates and adds an awesome horror element to produce something genuinely unique.
