Deadpool Review

I was worried about Deadpool. There was no need to worry. The odd one out of the Marvel cinematic universe gets a second chance – after the frankly horrible imaging of our hero in the Wolverine saga, Ryan Reynolds’ retelling of Deadpool’s origin story is quite brilliant.

From the off, Deadpool is funny. It knows exactly what it’s aiming for. It’s self-referential both from its troubled journey to screen and the terrible original vision. Set within the X-Men universe rather than that of the Avengers, Deadpool has a completely different tone than it’s parallel cousins.

Much has been made in the press about an R rated comic book movie but there have been some before (Kickass, Super) but none as prolific as this offering with such a mainstream character. Great comedy, great action (although the final battle does come a little too close to being a bit too generic action filmy), Deadpool is a brilliant ride which is different and fresh enough to light new energy in the comic book film franchises. How this will blend into the X-Men series (and confusion) remains to be seen but with Deadpool 2 already planned – we are in for more treats.
