This War of Mine: The Little Ones Review (PS4)

This War of Mine has been around on the PC for some time now, putting you in control of a trio of survivors trying to keep themselves going during a deadly civil war. Confined to their hideout by day, they must nip out in the cover of darkness and try and scavenge what they can, without getting caught by other survivors or staying out after the sun rises. Characters become unwell, wounded and depressed. Actions have consequences, and while stealing from innocent people or killing to survive might be essential at times, it plays on the minds of the characters, leading to drastic consequences later.

This console release adds the Little Ones DLC, meaning you can start games with kids involved. Initially, they’re nothing but a worry, unable to contribute and leaving you panicking about your return whenever you go out at night. But with time and nurturing they become more useful, more dependable and less of a worry, but still with this added empathy that was easy to miss when it was three grown adults fending for themselves.

It can be slow going, but I frequently sit down to play this for half an hour and suddenly realise 4 hours have passed. It’s a highly addictive and hugely thought provoking game, which is very much worth looking out for. Just… just look after those kids, ok?
